HOMEMADE HOT CHOCOLATE RECIPE

Homemade hot chocolate is the easiest drink you can treat yourself with in winter. It’s chocolatey, creamy and luscious and so easy to make.

This recipe is made with a combination of cocoa powder and chocolate chips. Adding the cocoa powder to hot water really brings out the flavor and dissolves well with the milk.  The chocolate chips add the extra chocolate flavor and the creamy texture. This combination prevents the watery consistency of a hot chocolate that sometimes people complain of.

After some quick searches on the internet, I came to learn that this now popular drink was introduced to the New World from Mexico. Here is an interesting read about the history of hot chocolate https://www.history.com/news/hot-chocolate-for-strength

RECIPE NOTES FOR THE INGREDIENTS

COCOA POWDER: I used natural unsweetened cocoa powder. Adding the cocoa powder to the hot water blooms it. This helps dissolve the cocoa powder and intensifies the chocolate flavor.

MILK: For this recipe I used whole milk, which gives the hot chocolate a cream texture rather than being watery.

CHOCOLATE: I used semi-sweet chocolate chips. Any good quality chocolate chips or a bar should be ok.

HEAVY CREAM: You can whip the heavy cream by hand like I did or use a handheld mixer. Make sure the heavy cream is chilled, so it easily whips up.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HOT COCOA & HOT CHOCOLATE?

WHAT IS HOT COCOA?

Hot cocoa is usually made from powdered cocoa, sugar, milk or water. Different flavorings or spices can be added. The consistency can be very light. Think of the packet cocoa powders where just water needs to be added.

WHAT IS HOT CHOCOLATE?

Hot chocolate is made with chopped or shaved good quality chocolate that has been melted in water, milk or cream. It’s creamier, rich and has a chocolatey flavor. Different flavorings like vanilla or cinnamon can also be used in hot chocolate.
