Our 20th Anniversary: Creating a Simple & Romantic Celebration at Home

Celebrating 20 years of marriage felt like something we couldn’t let pass without doing something special. I wanted our anniversary celebration at home to feel romantic and beautiful, but I also knew I didn’t want to create an overwhelming amount of work for myself.

I was already cooking, decorating, and preparing the house, so my goal with the décor was actually pretty simple: focus on a few areas, use many of the things I already owned, add fresh flowers and plenty of candlelight, and let our home be part of the backdrop.

The result was simple, romantic, and still felt like us.

Let Your Home Be Part of the Décor

One thing I think we sometimes forget when we’re hosting at home is that **our home is already decorated**.

You’ve probably already cleaned, moved a few things around, and prepared the spaces where everyone will gather. You don’t necessarily need to cover every wall, table, and corner with additional decorations.

For our anniversary, I didn’t want to hide the elements of our home that I already love under lots of balloons, garlands, or another décor. Instead, I wanted the anniversary decorations to complement our home.

That also meant less work for me before the celebration—and much less to take down afterward!

Choose a Few Focal Areas

Instead of spreading decorations everywhere, I prefer creating a few focal areas.

When you put a little bit of décor in ten different places, sometimes none of it really gets noticed. Concentrating those same elements in two or three areas can make a much bigger impact.

For an at-home celebration, your focal points could be:

* The dinner table

* A cake or dessert table

* A drink station

* A food or buffet area

* One backdrop or designated photo area

For our anniversary, the table and cake area were two of the spaces I especially wanted to feel finished.

Once those areas came together, I didn’t feel like every other corner of the house needed something added to it.

Fresh Flowers & My Vintage Vases

I used fresh flowers throughout the celebration and arranged them in mini vintage vases I’ve collected over the years.

The vases are pieces I already love and use again and again, so changing the flowers was really all they needed to feel completely different for our anniversary.

Candlelight Makes Everything More Romantic

For me, nothing creates a romantic atmosphere quite like candlelight.

I used flameless candles I’ve collected over time throughout the tables and focal areas. They’re one of those decorating pieces I reach for constantly because they work for so many different occasions.

Shop Your Own Home Before Buying More

My table runners were another thing I reused.

Before buying decorations for any celebration, I like to look through what I already own and see what can work with a slightly different setup.

Over time, I’ve found that it’s much more useful to invest in neutral pieces that aren’t tied to one specific party or holiday.

Things like:

* Neutral table runners and linens

* Clear or neutral vases

* Small vintage vases

* Candleholders

* Flameless candles

* Simple serving pieces

These can be brought out again and again and completely changed depending on the flowers, colors, season, or occasion you pair them with.

I’d rather invest in pieces I genuinely love and find new ways to use them than buy an entirely new set of decorations every time we celebrate something.

Keeping the Table Simple & Functional

For the dining table, I kept the décor very simple with just a table runner, fresh flowers, and candles. I wanted the table to feel beautiful and romantic, but I also wanted everyone to have plenty of room to sit, eat, and enjoy themselves.

Since we were hosting a larger group, we kept dinner casual and served everything buffet-style. Plates, cups, utensils, and everything guests needed were set up separately near the food so everyone could serve themselves.

For a larger family gathering at home, I find this much easier than trying to create a formal sit-down dinner. It keeps the dining table uncluttered, makes serving easier, and lets everyone relax and enjoy the meal.

Giving the Cake Its Own Moment

I gave the cake its own focal area and kept the styling simple. Since the cake was already a centerpiece on its own, I only added a few coordinating details to tie it into the rest of the celebration.

A dedicated cake table also creates a beautiful spot for pictures—whether it’s cutting the cake, family photos, or a few special anniversary photos together. It gives you one finished, intentional backdrop without having to decorate an entire room.

Beautiful Doesn’t Have to Mean More

I think this was probably my biggest takeaway from decorating for our anniversary.

I was cooking, preparing the house, and getting everything else ready for the celebration. I didn’t want decorating to become another enormous project.

Fresh flowers, lots of candlelight, a beautiful table, a cake area, and pieces I already loved were enough.

After all, the purpose wasn’t to create a venue inside our home. It was to                                                                                make our home feel just a little more special as we celebrated 20 years together. ❤️
